NREMT is changing the testing process for AEMT students, which will go into effect July 1, 2024. Instead of a psychomotor exam, a Student Minimum Competencies (SMC) matrix will be established. Each state EMS Office will establish passing requirements, and students must meet these minimum competencies as part of their program graduation requirements. Each state will be asked to consider the following when setting their SMCs1:
- Diversity of encounters involving differing patient ages
- Diversity of encounters differing pathology/complaints
- Specific AEMT skills
- Field experience and capstone field internship requirements
- Specific EMT skills
Once students have successfully met these minimum competencies and their other program requirements, they will be eligible to sit for the NREMT cognitive exam. One important note is the updated exam will include scenario and skill-based questions.
