What’s New For Examination Scoring?
On June 1st, 2023, the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) launched a new model for providing feedback to individuals who have failed an NREMT exam attempt. This new system, known as Scaled Score Reports, uses a graphical comparison of a candidate's examination results set side by side with the passing standard and shows the student where their score falls along the scale of the minimum possible score, passing score, and maximum possible score1.
The National Registry has determined that the current scoring method is still accurate in determining a provider’s proficiency; however, the domain-style feedback is not completely helpful. Each domain, of which there are 5, covers a broad range of information. Thus, a student could have very different domain results from one exam to the next, though their total score would remain similar. Therefore, a scaled score has been implemented to comply with industry standards and the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP)2.
How Does This Impact My Testing?
In short, it doesn’t. The exam content and scoring process will remain the same. The only change will be how scores are reported.
What Can I Do to Be Successful?
Whether you are retesting after unsuccessful completion or taking the test for the first time, there are some key points to focus on to improve your chances of success:
- Focus on areas of weakness: While studying, note topics you are struggling with. The EMTprep Readiness Score is a helpful tool the student can use to track proficiency in each topic and direct study as the student prepares for the NREMT exam.
- Take a Practice Test: EMTprep now offers a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) that closely mimics the NREMT exam. This is hugely beneficial for students who are in their final stages of preparation and need the confidence boost to feel prepared or who need to know where to spend their last bit of time studying.
- Adequate Rest and Relaxation: Make sure to take breaks throughout your test prep and get enough sleep before the exam. Work-life balance also will ensure you can retain information better while studying. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? We know it isn’t! So study wisely with EMTprep!
EMTprep offers numerous study aids to ensure your success, including focused and randomized quizzes, flashcards, study guides, worksheets, videos, and live courses. As mentioned before, our Readiness Score provides an accurate picture of where you stand in your test preparation and where your study should be focused. Our Computer Adaptive (CAT) Simulation Exam is the final step in ensuring adequate test preparation and will help you get a feel for your test day.
