Updates to Examination

The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) has announced a new project to deliver an updated ALS certification examination and simultaneously phase out the ALS psychomotor exams. These changes are being made per updated testing standards.

Why is this change occurring? 

 The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (the National Registry’s certification body) and the NREMT have received feedback from candidates, educators, and various state organizations and are using it to reconfigure the current examination so that it is a more accurate reflection of a candidate’s overall competency.

What does this mean for my testing experience and certification? 

If you do not complete the “old cognitive exam” before July 1, 2024, you must take the updated examination. During this sunset period, ALS psychomotor exams will be limited.

If you complete the “old cognitive exam” before July 1, 2024, but cannot complete the psychomotor examination before it is discontinued, you must take the updated examination. 

The National Registry’s eligibility or assessment policies (i.e., the two-year eligibility window and the number of examination attempts allowed) will be adjusted with the sunset of the psychomotor examination.

However, the NREMT has clarified that candidates will be given reasonable opportunities to gain National Certification within the bounds of their organizational policy.

June 1st, 2024: New updated examination is released and the ALS Psychomotor Examination is no longer available

1.) Check with your local certification and/or licensure course instructor(s) to verify your testing requirements
