How Much Time Should I Spend Studying for the NREMT?

If you’re asking yourself this question, don’t worry, you're not alone. This is a common question we receive from students. But really, how much time is enough? How many hours should you put in? Does the amount of time studied guarantee a pass? What will set you up for success on this test?

We recommend that you allow 2-8 weeks to study for the NREMT.

Use your textbook, class materials, and an online study prep, such as EMTprep.com. This is not the type of test you can cram for. By exposing yourself to the types of questions and format of the test through EMTprep.com’s content, it will definitely help properly prepare you for the test.

How will I know if I am ready for the NREMT exam?

Unfortunately, there is no real benchmark or metric for determining when you are ready. A couple of things to think about… How was class for you? Can you apply the information you’ve studied in various situations? How much study time have you put in for the NREMT test, generally speaking?

Once you’ve asked yourself these questions, it should lead you to one of two places:

  1. I have some work to do, or;
  2. I am ready to knock this thing out and begin my career

     Do what you can to avoid over-confidence here. You are only shorting yourself if you don't spend the amount of time that you need to prepare for the exam. Remember, you are trying to gauge how well you actually know the material. Only you know how well prepared you are to answer any and all questions the NREMT could throw at you.

     After you review your notes and textbooks, take a quiz on EMTprep.com, then ask yourself some questions: How did you perform on the exam? What kinds of questions did you miss? Are there any specific subjects that are giving you more trouble than others? What subjects are you very comfortable with and what subjects get your anxiety levels up?

     The bottom line is you know when you will be ready to take the exam. When you do schedule your exam, make sure you have given yourself enough time to study. Dedicate a certain amount of time daily, weekly, or whatever schedule you can commit to, that will set you up for success on test day. Study the topics you need the most clarity on, use a handful of resources, and dedicate yourself to this process. Your hard work will pay off once you pass this exam.
